Dance for Parkinson's
I love my Dance for Parkinson's class. I often nearly come to tears with happiness during the class. Everybody is beset with a burden - mostly Parkinson's but some have other health issues - it doesn't matter they join in and we have become a group - almost a family. Today the wife of one of the members (she regularly comes to class) was crying. We are preparing for an end of year concert and as our tutors are from Sydney Dance Company the performance is real. One of the pieces is to that ultimate tear jerker of a song "I can't help falling in love with you" . I later found out her wonderful husband, Wil who is one of the Parky bretheren is going into care and she is heart broken as she has been caring for him. They hug and cuddle all through the class.
Gary doesn't have PArkinson's. He has prostate cancer and is not good. He is an old queen and camps it up during class - he is a wonderful dancer and is in the front line of our end of year chorus line.
Then there is the opera singer with dementia. She grabs hold of a note in a song and soars with it. She has a beautiful carer who enjoys the class as much as her patient/ friend the lines seem to be blurred. THere is the father/ daughter couple. The father has gradually lost his initial inhibitions and floats around with the best of us now. Teresa the Irish women looks like a 60yr old punk and I saw her in the corner of my eye today really bopping along to the intro. A group of Chinese women don't seem to have PArkinson's, however there is some link to it but nobody cares as they come each week, make cakes and the sparkly bits of our costumes and laugh a lot. Our concert is next week. I will post a video but in the meantime I am still having great fun and we all make jokes about our PArkinson's. One of the tutors made a mistake today and she apologised forher brain fog. "Join the club riposted someone"!
Dance for Parkinson's is celebrating their 10th anniversary and the classes in ydney are putting on a show at Sydney Dance Company. You can get more information about Dance for PD from the following link:
